U.S. Bishops Consecrate the Nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
4:00PM on Jun 11, 2026

Today marks a historic moment for the Catholic Church in the United States. On this Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the U.S. bishops are consecrating the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus — the first such formal consecration in our nation's history — as the country celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The consecration is taking place during the USCCB Spring Plenary Assembly in Orlando, Florida, with the Mass beginning at 4 p.m. EDT. Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger joins bishops from across the country in this solemn act of prayer, reparation, and renewed national commitment to the mercy and justice of Christ.

A Call to Mercy and Action

For Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, an organization rooted in the Works of Mercy and the love of Christ, this consecration carries deep meaning. The Sacred Heart is not simply a devotional image — it is a summons. As the bishops have emphasized, honoring the Heart of Christ must move us outward, toward the poor, the suffering, and the vulnerable in our communities.

The USCCB has invited all parishes, families, and individuals to join in this moment through Eucharistic Adoration, the national Novena to the Sacred Heart (prayed June 3–11), and acts of mercy. Pope Francis' 2024 encyclical Dilexit Nos ("He Loved Us") and Pope Leo XIV's apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te ("I Have Loved You") have both renewed the Church's reflection on the Sacred Heart as a wellspring of peace, unity, and compassionate love for all people.
