Catholic Charities Honors Senior Companion Volunteers for a Year of Service
On June 4, 2026, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan gathered to celebrate the heart of one of its most cherished programs. At a recognition luncheon held at Filippa's Italian Restaurant in Shelby Township, 32 volunteers from our AmeriCorps Senior Companion Program were honored and thanked for the remarkable 30,000 hours of service they provided to seniors in need this past year.
"We cannot do this without you," said Carmela LaCommare, Program Manager, as she addressed the room full of dedicated volunteers. Carmela also shared welcome news: Catholic Charities' grant for the Senior Companion Program has been renewed for another three years — an announcement met with enthusiastic applause.
Catholic Charities is deeply grateful for these senior volunteers, many of whom have faithfully served in the program for a decade or more. Their steadfast presence is a living witness to the works of mercy, bringing comfort and companionship to those who might otherwise face their days alone.
About the Senior Companion Program
The Senior Companion Program recruits seniors age 55 and older who are on a limited income to provide friendly visits and companionship to homebound seniors in their communities. These volunteers are also able to earn a stipend for their service.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, we invite you to reach out to Carmela LaCommare at 248-337-3300, extension 3937 to learn more.
