MLK Day 2021
Jan 15, 2021
Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past quarter-century. We invite you to join with AmeriCorps in honoring his legacy to serve by creating or participating in safe service initiatives in your neighborhood. The dedicated MLKDay.gov website provides resources, ideas, and inspirational stories of service to share. You can search for projects in your community to join or create your own COVID-19 safe service activities, using some of the tips available on the website. Here are a few ways you can engage, either on your own or as a group, keeping in mind COVID-19 safety guidelines
  • Organize your family and friends to engage to clean up a nearby park.
  • Check on or deliver care packages to isolated neighbors.
  • Find an organization you’re passionate about and make a commitment to serve with them year-round to Honor Dr. King’s legacy throughout the year.
  • Donate to a local organization in need
  • Sign-up to learn about opportunities to serve year-round.

A champion of civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dreams were much aligned with many of our Catholic teachings: care for the poor and vulnerable; solidarity in our one human family, regardless of race, ethnicity, religious, or economic differences; the life and dignity of all people; fair wages and treatment in civic matters; peace, equality, and social justice among all; and discipleship of Christ. Join us at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit for a live-streamed Mass on Monday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. to pray for continued progress on race relations and the work begun by Dr. King.
